Washington, D.C. – On August 25, 2020, with support from the Tahoe Fund and Team Tahoe Partners, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) virtually hosted the 24th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit, entitled “Resilient Tahoe.” This virtual summit highlighted 50 years of bi-state cooperation and 24 years of bipartisan collaboration by stakeholders through a series of keynote speakers and panel discussions from Nevada’s and California’s congressional delegations, governors, frontline workers, tribal members, scientist and conservationists. The summit focused on the success of public-private partnerships to protect Lake Tahoe and convened discussions on the challenges confronting the Tahoe Basin during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
PBS member stations in Reno and Las Vegas will rebroadcast the 24th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Sunday, December 27, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PT, and on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at 9:00 p.m. PT, respectively. In conjunction with the Tahoe Summit program, and in coordination with PBS Reno’s education department, The Discovery Museum, and a number of Team Tahoe partners, are providing an array of environmental educational curriculum and activities for families and students to participate in.

BACKGROUND:
Senator Cortez Masto continues to be a champion for clean energy and the conservation of Nevada’s and the nation’s greatest treasures. In August, Cortez Masto hosted a virtual roundtable discussion with Nevada conservation leaders on her work to pass the recently enacted Great American Outdoors Act, which fully funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The Senator also announced a pollution reducing shuttle service from the RTC of Washoe before the summit, and recently announced nearly $100,000 in grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency for projects to address microplastic pollution in Lake Tahoe, a topic covered during this year’s Lake Tahoe Summit. During a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water and Power hearing this year, Senator Cortez Masto spoke with panelist Julie Regan, Chief of External Affairs & Deputy Director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, about the importance of a comprehensive, collaborative and science-based approach to protect Lake Tahoe and other water resources in Nevada from the threat of climate change and invasive species.
