(Cortez Masto Meets With Nonprofit Leaders)
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today hosted virtual meetings with African American community leaders from across the Silver State, as well as leaders of nonprofit organizations, to hear from them about continuing needs in Nevada during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I appreciated the opportunity to hear from Nevada officials, business owners, and other African American community leaders today about how the coronavirus pandemic has been affecting Black Nevadans and what I can do in the Senate to continue to address community needs. We know that the coronavirus has had a disproportionate impact on African Americans, both in terms of health and economic impacts. I want to be sure that I’m hearing from hard-hit communities so that I can bring their voices back to Washington.
“I also was eager to hear from Nevada’s nonprofit leaders, whose organizations have been at the forefront of helping Nevadans cope with food insecurity, job loss, housing issues, and more. It’s so important to know what they are seeing on the ground as Nevada addresses the pandemic, so that we can ensure that future coronavirus relief packages don’t leave anyone out.”
BACKGROUND:
Senator Cortez Masto has consistently supported bipartisan legislation that would stem the pandemic, protect public health, and provide comprehensive relief for Nevada’s struggling communities. She has voted for all five of the relief packages that have been enacted into law. Senator Cortez Masto has advocated for nonprofit organizations to get access to relief funds, and the most recent relief legislation she supported, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, made it easier for nonprofits to access PPP funding. The Senator introduced the Minority Business Resiliency Act to support minority-owned businesses during COVID-19 and beyond. In addition, she has introduced the COVID-19 Health Disparities Action Act of 2020 to develop an action plan to address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 among communities of color, and cosponsored the Community Solutions for COVID-19 Act, which would provide funding to communities of color in Nevada and across the nation.
