Cortez Masto Votes to Confirm Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm as Secretary of Energy

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) voted today to confirm Jennifer Granholm as Secretary of Energy.

“Governor Jennifer Granholm has a strong record of embracing renewable energy, which promises to benefit Nevada. The majority of the Silver State’s in-state energy assets are renewable resources, and the state is positioned well to continue building upon the renewable energy industry. I look forward to working with Secretary Granholm to expand Nevada’s clean energy workforce and make sure that the Biden administration stands with Nevada in its opposition to a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain.”

Background:

Senator Cortez Masto has a strong history of promoting renewable energy and opposing nuclear waste disposal at Yucca Mountain. She has introduced legislation to ensure the Secretary of Energy obtains written consent from state, local, and tribal leaders before allowing construction of a nuclear waste repository. As part of her Innovation State Initiative, she has introduced a suite of legislation to promote electric vehicles and improve clean energy infrastructure, as well as to offer grants for projects that increase energy efficiency in our nation’s schools. The senator also championed the extension of renewable energy investment tax credits, which were included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, to help Nevada’s solar energy industry.
