Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today called on her colleagues to support the Women’s Health Protection Act as the Senate votes on the legislation, which she cosponsored to guarantee equal access to abortion everywhere.
“It’s a crucial moment for reproductive rights in America, as millions of women in this country are on the brink of losing access to critical reproductive health care. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, nearly half of women nationwide will see the nearest clinic close. That includes in neighboring Utah and Idaho, where extreme abortion bans will be triggered immediately if Roe is overturned. Women in those states and in many others will urgently seek care in Nevada, potentially overwhelming health clinics and threatening access to quality care for women seeking help. Women’s health care is not optional. The Women’s Health Protection Act safeguards the right to choose across the country, and the Senate must pass it before it is too late.”
Senator Cortez Masto has been a tireless advocate for reproductive rights and the Women’s Health Protection Act in the U.S. Senate. Last year, she raised the alarm about the danger a Mississippi case represents to Roe v. Wade and joined Congressional colleagues in filing a brief in the case urging the Supreme Court to uphold Roe. She was a vocal opponent of the Trump administration’s efforts to limit access to family planning and reproductive health care and worked to block federal court nominees who would roll back women’s health care and reproductive freedoms.
