Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) announced that $27.1 million in grant funding will go to Uprise Fiber to improve broadband access in Lovelock and the surrounding areas. This funding will help Uprise launch a network to connect 4,884 people, 130 businesses, 22 farms, and 7 public schools across rural Nevada to high-speed internet. Senator Cortez Masto was critical to securing this funding and voted to pass the appropriations bill that helped underwrite this grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She has worked extensively to expand affordable, high-speed internet in Nevada and across the country, including via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“This funding I helped secure will support quality, high-speed internet for students, job-seekers, and businesses in rural Nevada,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’ve been a longtime advocate for programs to make sure that Nevadans in rural and urban areas alike can access broadband, and I’ll keep working to connect Nevadans.”
On Wednesday, Senator Cortez Masto joined White House Infrastructure Coordinator Mitch Landrieu and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to discuss investments in high-speed internet she secured for Nevada and communities across the country, including the Uprise funding.
As part of her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto has led in the Senate to improve broadband access, including in rural communities, and strengthen Nevada’s economy. Most recently, she advocated for provisions in the bipartisan infrastructure law to invest in broadband. In 2020, she passed her bipartisan ACCESS BROADBAND Act to foster the development and growth of broadband resources for businesses, as well as underserved urban and rural communities in Nevada, through improved access and transparency of federal broadband.
