Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) visited Monaco Middle School in Las Vegas, accompanied by staff of the Communities in Schools program, ahead of the upcoming school year. She discussed her work to support teachers, students, and their families, and she highlighted the success of Communities in Schools (CIS), an incredibly successful resource for students in Title 1 schools across Las Vegas and Nevada. She supported ESSER funding in COVID relief bills that secured over $1 million for CIS in Nevada.

“Nevada’s students are our future, and I’ve been working in the Senate to make sure they’re supported throughout the upcoming school year,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “It was great to join Communities in Schools today to discuss how we can work together to get students the resources they need to graduate and succeed. I’ll keep delivering for Nevada kids and their families, whether that’s more psychologists and mental health counselors in schools or funding to improve school infrastructure.”

Senator Cortez Masto has delivered critical support to students and schools across Nevada. She recently secured $950,000 to help Clark County School District better support students recovering from substance abuse and mental health struggles. Cortez Masto’s provision to increase the number of mental health professionals in schools was included in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was signed into law in June. In addition, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law included three of Cortez Masto’s bipartisan bills to improve schools. These bills improve transportation safety for students, increase access to internet for both rural and urban schools, and improve school air quality. Throughout the pandemic, she delivered funding to help schools re-open and stay open, and she also passed the Child Nutrition Relief Act to help ensure students could access nutritious, free meals year-round.
