Cortez Masto Announces That SMART Community Grants Are Now Available

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) announced that the SMART community grants she worked to secure in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are now available to help communities in Nevada and across the nation improve their transportation systems. The infrastructure law incorporated Senator Cortez Masto’s bipartisan Moving FIRST Act to promote smart-city innovations that use technology to solve transportation challenges.

“I’ve led bipartisan efforts to help Nevada communities continue their innovative work to use technology to solve transportation challenges,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’m thrilled funds that I secured in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are available to Nevada state, local, and Tribal government to pioneer smart solutions that improve life in our communities, make it easier to get around, reduce pollution, and make sure first responders can reach emergencies quickly.”

The SMART Grants Program in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is offering up to $100 million in grants annually over the next five years to fund projects that use data and technology to solve real-world challenges facing communities.

As part of her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto has worked to improve transportation all over the state. She secured multiple transportation provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help Nevada communities make even more improvements to their roads and bridges, plan for and build electric vehicle infrastructure, and make transit to school safer for students, as well as to support smart cities that use technology to solve transportation challenges.

Senator Cortez Masto’s Moving FIRST Act, which was included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, was supported by the Nevada League of Cities, the Nevada Association of Counties, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce, the Nevada Trucking Association, Switch, the Tahoe Transportation District, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), and the Tahoe Prosperity Center, National League of Cities, National Association of Counties, Lyft, Uber, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the U.S. Chamber Technology Engagement Center (C-TEC), ITS America, the Association of Global Automakers, Honda North America, Inc., the American Trucking Associations, the Railroad Passengers Association, the League of American Bicyclists, the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, the Smart City Council, Venture Smarter, the Smart Regions Initiatives, the Center for Data Innovation, Panasonic Corporation of North America, GPS Innovation Alliance (GPSIA), Wi-fiber, Waycare, Qualcomm, CompTIA, Security Industry Association (SIA), CTIA, Verizon, Sprint, Geotab, Hotwire Communications, Small UAV Coalition, the Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE) and The Electrification Coalition.
