Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released the following statement and video commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival tragedy on October 1, 2017. Earlier this week, the senator spoke on the Senate floor to honor the victims and today she participated in the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center’s healing lantern project to honor the strength and resilience of the Las Vegas community.

“This weekend marks five years since the horrific Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in my hometown of Las Vegas,” said Senator Cortez Masto, “I want to thank the Center and all the community members and organizations across Nevada who are organizing such powerful acts of remembrance this weekend. As we remember one of Las Vegas’ darkest nights five years ago, we do so by honoring the lives of the victims of this tragedy and recognizing all the survivors, families, and first responders whose lives were forever changed.”

The Vegas Strong Resiliency Center is a place for healing resources for victims, survivors, families, friends, and Nevadans affected by the horrifying shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. The center offers victim advocacy, counseling, financial assistance, and other assistance to help survivors heal. Today, Friday, September 30th, the VSCR will be hosting a virtual ceremony at 6:30 PM (PDT) to honor the victims and survivors of the tragedy and light lanterns as symbols of support and remembrance. Las Vegas community members are encouraged to display their lanterns on Saturday, October 1st and throughout the weekend.
