Cortez Masto: “We’re here to make our mark in history”
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) introduced a resolution celebrating and honoring the contributions of Latinas in the U.S. in a variety of fields while acknowledging the pervasive glass ceilings Latinas have yet to break in their path to full equality in American society.
“From business and our military to science and education, Latinas’ impact is felt at every level in American society, and we’re here to make our mark in history,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I am the first Latina Senator but I know I won’t be the last. That’s why I’m proud to introduce this resolution celebrating Latinas’ immeasurable contributions our economy and social fabric, as well as recommitting ourselves to building a better future for our nieces and daughters.”

The first and only Latina elected to the U.S. Senate, Senator Cortez Masto has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and the Latino community. She passed into law her bipartisan legislation to authorize a series of U.S. quarters to honoring women’s history and suffrage, which will feature Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, among other prominent women. She has pushed legislation to promote women and underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. And she regularly supports legislation to advance women and Latinas’ professional opportunities, such as federal funding for Minority-Serving Institutions, including the four Hispanic-Serving Institutions in Nevada.
