Reno, Nev. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) announced $825,549 in grant funding to help four Tribes in Nevada protect the environment and combat climate change. This funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will support environmental programs on Tribal land, including efforts to implement climate change response plans, reduce emissions, and improve the water quality of local rivers, lakes, and streams.
“This grant funding delivers resources to important projects that will help Tribes in Nevada limit pollution, safeguard their water resources, and plan for the future,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “Tribes across Nevada are doing incredible work to protect their communities and combat climate change, and I’m proud to help support their critical efforts.”
“As our state confronts the effects of climate change, it’s critical that communities across Nevada have the resources they need to adapt,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m glad to see the Duckwater Shoshone, Ely Shoshone, the Fallon Paiute Shoshone, and Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes are receiving funding to implement climate resiliency programs and keep Nevadans healthy and safe.”
The awards will be distributed as follows:
- $169,749 to the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in Tribal communities. This funding is supported by provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act that Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen helped pass.
- $115,000 to the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe to support Tribal environmental protection work, including programs to protect the water quality of local rivers, lakes and streams.
- $170,800 to the Ely Shoshone Tribe to implement environmental programs including a new recycling effort, hazardous waste spill plan, watershed assessment, and climate change adaptation plan.
- $370,000 to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe to protect and improve the water quality of Tribal rivers, lakes, streams, groundwater, and other bodies of water.
Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen have worked to support Nevada’s Tribal communities and improve their infrastructure. The Senators have passed critical legislation to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which protects public lands in Nevada and across the country. Senators Cortez Masto and Rosen have been vocal supporters of the Avi Kwa Ame national monument in Southern Nevada and have both urged Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland to support the creation of the Bahsahwahbee (or Swamp Cedars) National Monument in Eastern Nevada. Last week, the Senators announced $1.3 million in funding they secured for the Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California to modernize and strengthen their energy infrastructure and make investments in clean energy.
