Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) touted Nevada’s mining industry at a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing today, highlighting the tens of thousands of jobs it supports and how important it will be for the nation’s clean energy economy.

“Nevada also has the largest mining program on public land in the country, which supports nearly 33,000 jobs in the state and is the key contributor to the economy and social safety net for many rural and remote communities in my state,” said Cortez Masto.

Senator Cortez Masto went on to raise concerns about the Biden administration’s new report regarding mining on federal lands, focusing on its recommended “dirt tax” that would hurt Nevada’s mining industry.

Mr. Mark Compton, Executive Director of the American Exploration & Mining Association, echoed her concerns, explaining that this tax would cost the mining industry hundreds of millions of dollars per year, which would have an outsized impact in Nevada.

Senator Cortez Masto has led efforts in Congress to support Nevada’s mining industry, protecting tens of thousands of local jobs and paving the way for Nevada to power the clean energy economy. She has consistently blocked burdensome taxes on mining and wrote important provisions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to bolster Nevada’s critical mineral supply chain and fund battery recycling programs in the state. Earlier this year, Senator Cortez Masto introduced bipartisan legislation to protect critical mineral production in response to the misguided Rosemont decision, which is threatening mining projects in Nevada and across the West.
